What a clear quote should include
- The diagnosis: what the workshop thinks is wrong, in plain language.
- Parts: what is being replaced, and whether parts are genuine, OEM or aftermarket.
- Labour: the work involved, either as a fixed price or estimated hours.
- GST: whether the price includes it. GST-registered workshops charge 9% GST.
- Warranty: on parts and on the workmanship, and for how long.
- Timing: when they can start and how long the car will be with them.
If a quote is a single number with no breakdown, it is fair to ask for one.
Genuine, OEM or aftermarket parts
- Genuine: made for and sold by the car brand. Usually the most expensive.
- OEM: often made by the same supplier as the genuine part, without the brand box. Frequently similar quality at a lower price.
- Aftermarket: made by third parties. Quality ranges from excellent to poor, so the brand matters.
For safety-critical parts such as brakes and steering, it is reasonable to prefer genuine or reputable OEM parts. For many other parts, good aftermarket options are fine.
How to compare quotes fairly
- Check that each quote fixes the same problem. A lower quote may cover a smaller scope, such as a top-up instead of a repair.
- Compare like-for-like parts. A genuine part and an aftermarket one are not the same price for a reason.
- Look at the warranty. A slightly higher price with a solid workmanship warranty can be better value.
- Factor in downtime. If you rely on the car daily, a workshop that can finish sooner may be worth more to you.
- Read reviews from other owners, especially on how the workshop handled problems.
Questions to ask before you say yes
- Will you call me for approval before doing any extra work?
- Is there a diagnostic or inspection fee, and is it waived if I go ahead?
- Can I have the old parts back?
- What warranty do you give on parts and labour?
- Is the price final, or could it change once you open things up?
Some faults can only be confirmed once the car is opened up. A good workshop will explain this upfront, give you a range, and ask before going beyond it.
Getting several quotes without the legwork
Calling round workshops and describing the same problem five times takes time. On AXL you describe the job once and vetted Singapore workshops send quotes you can compare side by side, with parts, timing and notes in the same format. Your contact details stay private until you choose a workshop.
Frequently asked questions
Should I always choose the cheapest quote?
Not automatically. Check that the scope, parts and warranty are comparable first. The cheapest quote is good value only if it fixes the same problem to the same standard.
Can a workshop charge more than the quote?
A reputable workshop should ask for your approval before doing work beyond what was quoted. Agree on this before work starts, and get any changes in writing, even by message.
Does servicing at an independent workshop void my warranty?
Generally no. Following a 2017 review by the Competition Commission of Singapore, major car dealers removed terms that voided warranties just because a car was serviced elsewhere. A dealer can still reject a claim if the fault was caused by the independent work, so use a reputable workshop and keep your records.
